With barely eight months to the general elections, there are reports of “skirt and blouse” campaigning by the People’s National Convention(PNC) Parliamentary Candidate for Walewale constituency in the Northern Region, Abubakar Abdullah.
Although the PNC had elected Hassan Ayariga, as its presidential candidate for the December election, Mr. Abdullah seemed not to have found favour with Mr. Ayariga, and therefore not campaigning for the PNC Presidential candidate.
A source in the constituency told the Times that the campaign team of Mr. Abdullah has abandoned the PNC’s slogan of “two direct, two sure” implying victory for the party at the presidential and parliamentary tickets.
Another source told the Times that the four- time PNC presidential candidate Dr Edward Mahama, was said to have told listeners of the Eagle FM Station 94.1 in Walewale recently that Mr. Abdullah was a potential president and that the electorate should vote for him as the MP so that he would be groomed for the party’s flagbearer in the future.
The source told the Times that Mr. Abdullah, who is said to be the Northern Ghana Director of ActionAid, a non-governmental organisation, was appealing his supporters to vote for him as the Member of Parliament for the area and either the National Democratic Congress Presidential candidate Professor J.E.A.Mill or Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party Presidential Candidate depending on the stronghold of the two.
Mr. Abdullah, however, denied the claim saying “that is a lie” when the Times reached him on phone on Monday and added that he would not like to discuss the matter on phone because he was not sure of the credibility of the reporter.
The source said when Mr. Abdullah was asked about party agents at the ongoing Biometric Voter Registration exercise, he claimed that it was the NDC and NPP who were campaigning for presidential and parliamentary and that he should not be bothered.
The General Secretary of the PNC ,Bernard Mornah told the Times that he had been on a programme on the Eagle FM Station Walewale FM station at which he appealed to the supporters of the party to vote for Mr. Abdullah as the parliamentary candidate and Mr. Ayariga as the presidential candidate.
Mr. Mornah said the claim of “skirt and blouse” by the party’s parliamentary candidate has not come to his attention.
Alhaji Iddrisu Zakari Alidu is the National Democratic Congress party Member of Parliament for the constituency that was once (2001-2005) held by the PNC.
