The Vice President John Dramani Mahama has apologised to motorists and commuters plying the Mallam Junction road in Accra and assured that the inconvenience they are currently experiencing would be over by next February.

He explained that the contractor executing the road project had to block certain roads in order to speed up work so as to meet the February 15, 2012 deadline when the accounts would expire.

The Vice President was speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference on the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) compact II in Accra on Tuesday.

He said following the efficient utilization of the 547 million dollars under the first compact Ghana was among a few countries selected last year for a second compact which she was expected to be signed on to by the end of 2012.

Mr. Mahama said as the first compact would expire on February 15, any amount on the first compact not disbursed would be returned to U.S. government chest.

He said it was to avoid any such challenge that the contractor had to work on a very tight schedule to enable him to complete the job.

“I understand people have to wake up as early as 4 am in order to beat the heavy traffic,” he said and apologised for the inconveniences being experienced by the travelling public on that stretch of road.

He said when the project was completed next February, traffic would greatly improve.

Mr. Mahama was of the view that the next compact should be flexible enough to get more local companies on board.

He noted that the situation by which contract on the MCA was opened to international bidding process deprived many local companies from winning the bids as the expatriate companies were able to bid lower with their economy comparative advantage over the local counterparts.

The Vice President said favourable bidding processes for local companies would facilitate job creation in the country.
