The Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Haruna Yakubu, has admonished students of the university to endeavor to use the knowledge they have acquired to make positive impact on the lives of the communities within the university’s catchment area.

He said a good community engagement requires that the students impart academic knowledge experiences on the communities and “be expected with open minds to adapt to their host communities”.

Prof. Yakubu said this at an orientation course at Nyankpala to prepare the students to undertake their third trimester field practical programme.

The programme forms an integral part of the university’s curricula which ensures that both students and staff work closely with the disadvantaged and hard-to-reach people and communities, with focus on poverty reduction.

Prof. Yakubu said “as a pro-poor targeted university, the UDS will continue to be alive with its mandate by blending the academics with community engagements, in order to provide constructive and meaningful interaction between the two for total development of northern Ghana and the country as a whole”.

According to him the programme had gained popularity in and outside the boundaries of the country and “was a direct relevance to the government’s decentralisation policy”.

Prof. Yakubu, therefore, appealed to stakeholders, especially the government, district assemblies, well-meaning individuals and organisations, to financially support the university to maintain the programme.

He reminded the students that there was no way they could successfully graduate from UDS without undertaking the third trimester programme and all that it entails.

The programme co-coordinator, Dr. Bawa Doameyakor, said its uniqueness places UDS in a better position to provide useful services through exchange of knowledge, and its application to address the development needs and aspirations of local communities.

He said 12,500 students will be spread out in 1,131 communities in the three northern regions and other deprived communities in the Brong-Ahafo, Volta and Eastern Regions, during this year’s programme.
