THE University of Cape Coast, (UCC) will launch its 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday.

The anniversary is under theme; UCC @ 50: Achievements and Aspirations”

Announcing this at a news conference in Accra on Monday, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Vice-chancellor of UCC, said some major activities slated to mark the one year celebration include lectures, and conferences, Hall as well as, Regional Alumni activities and fun games.

She said others would be award of honorary degrees, alumni homecoming and a float through the principal streets of Cape Coast and a banquet to round up the celebration.

Highlighting some achievements chalked by the UCC which is the third public University established in 1962 she said from a humble legacy of few buildings from Kwame Nkrumah Training College at the South Campus, usually known as old site, “there has been unprecedented infrastructural development all over the university, especially at the North Campus”.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the university had on a sustainable basis undertaken a number of building projects designed to increase the stock of laboratories, lecture theaters, office units and accommodation facilities for both staff and students.
She said over the years, UCC had become a pacesetter in many disciplines, programmes and policies.

“Notably among them include Distance and Continuing Education in the Dual Mode, a rigorous Grading system that matches an 80 per cent to an “A” and the In-Out-Out”, she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said in consonance with UCC’s emphasis on embracing various communities in the Metropolis and the region, the various schools of the university undertake outreach programmes in the communities.

She said, for instance, “The Directorate of the University Health Sciences offers wide range of services to the university community and people in the Cape Coast metropolis”.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said “The UCC has academic collaboration with international universities and a number of MOUs have been signed with some top foreign universities to collaborate in areas such as research and capacity development in varied disciplines.”

Touching on the way forward after the anniversary, she said, “the University will work hard to ensure that it is recognised by the world as a centre of excellence in education through the provision of effective teaching, life-long learning, advance of knowledge through research and scholarship,” adding that “we plan to continue our strategy to produce the student who turns challenges into opportunities.
