UDS Commends Ghanaian Times

The newly inducted Vice-Chancellor for the University for Development Studies (UDS, Prof. Haruna Yakubu, has commended the media, particularly the “Ghanaian Times newspaper for devoting its space to promote issues of education.

“In fact Ghanaian Times over the years has given much coverage to news concerning education especially news from UDS in the north,” he remarked.

Prof. Yakubu said this on Thursday night in Tamale at the first everpress soiree organized by the university. He stressed on the need for media houses to assist promote quality education in the country.

He maintained that the fight against illiteracy in the country cannot succeed without the cooperation and collaboration of media practitioners.

Prof. Yakubu therefore appealed to the various media houses to emulate the shining example of the “Ghanaian Times” by allocating more space and time for educational issues in the country.

The Vice-Chancellor lamented that most journalists and many media houses often devote much of their time and space to politics to the detriment of more important issues such as education, health and agriculture.

Prof. Yakubu pledged to run an open administration and urged all, especially the media to feel free to cross check any information about the school before publishing it.
The Vice-chancellor also entreated the media to offer useful suggestions that would assist the university to achieve its objectives and goals.

Touching on the way forward, Prof. Yakubu hinted that there are plans to reduce shortages of qualified teachers in the Northern sector by the establishment of a collage of education in the university.

He explained that the introduction of a college of education of collage at the UDS would assist it to fulfill its mandate of addressing the challenges confronting the rural communities.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the only way to overcome the shortages of qualified and competent teachers is to produce more teachers from three northern regions.
