The University of Cape Coast intends to establish a School of Pharmacy with emphasis on plant medicine.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has therefore proposed a feasibility study into the establishment of the school.
The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku- Agyemang, announced this at the formal launching of the 50th anniversary celebration of the university held on Saturday to kick-start activities for the year-long event.
Established in December 1962, as a University College of Science Education with two faculties, UCC has blossomed into an independent university with eight schools and faculties.
A proposed Faculty of Law which would soon roll out its programmes would therefore bring the number of schools and faculties to nine.
The model for the Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre to be established a monument to mark the anniversary was unveiled at the ceremony.
On the diversification of its programmes, Prof. Opoku -Agyemang said ‘‘UCC still remains committed to education as a mission and a mandate, even as we diversify our offerings’’.
She further indicated that the university’s mission of transforming the University press into a publishing house was still on course.
The Vice-Chancellor said events of the celebration had been decentralised into the regions and beyond to enable everybody to actively participate in the programmes.
Among some of the event planned for the celebration include: SRC week celebrations, regional activities by alumni, anniversary honorary degree awards, alumni home-coming and a banquet.
She said the administration want UCC to be recognised as a centre of excellence in education through the provision of effective teaching, life-long learning, the advancement of knowledge through research and scholarship as well as a commitment to service.
‘‘We plan to stay our strategy that produces responsible citizens to turn challenges into opportunities’’ she said.
Prof. Nana Opoku-Agyemang reiterated that the university would stimulate the environment by creating opportunities for internship even on campus.
The Council chairman of the university, Mr. Justice A.K.B. Ampiah, who launched the anniversary, in his remarks called for the participation of all in order to make the event a success.
He appealed to corporate bodies as well as individuals to support the university with their contributions.
