The Takoradi International Company Limited (TICO) has awarded scholarships worth 35,000 dollars to 30 students within the company’s catchments area under its ‘Krammer Scheme”.
The beneficiaries come from Abuesi, Aboadze, Shama and Ntwaban.
The General Manager of TICO, Nana Osafo Adjei, said the scheme formed part of its corporate social responsibility to invest in social development.
He said the scheme, which began in 2001 with $1,000 and covered seven students, had grown to become a scholarship programme.
“The government will draw the national agenda for development, but corporate entities also have some roles to play,” he pointed out.
Nana Adjei appealed to parents not to shirk their responsibilities and asked: “Today we are investing $35,000 into the scholarship awards scheme. What shall come out of it?”
“You need to sacrifice the limited resources you have and you can do it,” he further urged the parents.
He noted that children constituted the “fulcrum of development” saying that, the children of Shama, Abuesi, Ntwaban and Aboadze should grow to become responsible leaders.
The acting Shama District Director of Education, Miss Florence Inkoom, who chaired the ceremony, frowned on teenage pregnancy and other dubious acts of the youth.
“Teenage pregnancy is the problematic issue confronting education. Don’t allow the money to be wasted,” she added.
Miss Inkoom said the education directorate would monitor the performance of the beneficiaries “so that the investments would not be in vain. You must justify the scholarships you have received”.
Patrick Atta Baidoo, who is a student at the University of Ghana, Legon, thanked Tico for the scholarship awards saying “we will not fail you”.
