Telecom University Holds Graduation

Three hundred and thirty-four graduands made up 296 undergraduates and 38 post graduates, graduated from the Ghana Telecom University College in Accra at the weekend.

The college could boast of student’s population of 2,324 distributed across the three core undergraduate faculties Engineering, Informatics, IT Business and the graduate school.

Addressing the second congregation, of the college Dr. Osei K. Darkwa, president of the Ghana continue to attract students from various countries around the world and this year admitted 194 international students from various countries around the world and this year admitted 194 international students from 17 countries to pursue various programmes of the university.

Dr. Darkwa noted that the country University in the United Kingdom, early this year approved six additional post-graduate programmes to be offered in the college and that brings to ten approved post graduate programmes from Coventry University.

He said 24 graduates students who have successfully completed the one year post graduate programme from Coventry University are among the graduands passing –out.

The president said they are continuing to explore new possibilities with Coventry University and hoped to introduce new programmes at both the undergraduate and Doctoral Levels early next year.

According to him, research and contribution to knowledge and National Development is what defines academic institutions of any country, and therefore the college has been strengthening the existening research structures to meet industry demand.

The college he mentioned, early this year won a World Bank grant to provide consulting and training services for the development of Business Processing out sourcing (BPO) for the Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES).

He said, they are of the tail end of developing and customising a Ghana focused International BPO training curricumand and a talent credentials system through which Ghanaian BPO talents can attain International Certificates on a convenient, cost- effective and sustainable basis.

“On-going research activities focus on areas such as cybercrime, mobile learning, mobile through ICT, Virtual Institution building are in progress” he said.

He added that the goal was to harness the teaching and Leaning powers of the new Information and communication technologies, to connect students to their lecturers where they may be, through distance learning strategy that would use the new technologies as the learning agents which has minimized the need for conventional buildings and allow to tap into the teaching forces of the world as well as our own.

Dr. Darkwa said a new collaboration with the National Procurement Board will enable them to offer new programmes in supply chain management, purchasing and logistics and related programmes after the National Accreditation Board had granted them the go-ahead to pursue the programme.

In this keynote address, Professor Jophus Anamuah –Mensah, Executive chair, Teachers Education in Sub-Sahara Africa Commended GTUC for the attempt to bring the institution closer to the industry, to meet the needs of the country’s demand.

He urged government not to pay Lip Services to issues of technology, but instead pump more moneys into the application of technologies in the institutions through the country.

He called on government to help expand the institutions and pay critical attention to technology, to help equip students with requisite skills for the industries.
