Ghana's National Table Tennis youth team, comprising four young boys and two girls, won a total of nine medals at the just ended 5th West African Table Tennis Federation (S.O.M Alassane Ouattara) Table Tennis Championship, held in Abidjan, La Cote d'Ivoire, from December 16 to 18.

Under-18 star Samuel Akayade won gold in the boys Under-18 single, beating his Ghanaian playing partner Emmanuel Commey to silver and then later paired up with Commey to snatch gold in the boys Under-18 doubles event as well.

Ghana’s duo of Eva Cynthia Kwabi and Amankwa failed to emulate the feat achieved by their male counterparts as they settled for silver in the girls Under-18 doubles event. Kwabi again failed to win gold in the single event as she picked her second silver of the tournament.

In the Under-15 double event Isaac Amoako and Bernard Hackman teamed up to pick silver, while Amoako won personal second silver in the Under-15 single’s event with Hackman settled for bronze in the Under-13 cadet event.

The team together with Technical Head Anthony Owusu-Ansah and the president of the Ghana Table Tennis Federation (GTTF) Rev. Richmond Quarcoo, paid a courtesy call on the director general of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Mr. Worlanyo K. Agra to present their trophies and medals they won at the tournament.

Mr. Agra congratulated the team for their sterling performance put up at the championships and stated that he was not surprised at the feet chalked by the team because of the hard work and dedication the association including its president Rev. Quarcoo have given to the sport over the last one year.

He disclosed that the NSA is in talks with some of its foreign partners for some scholarship programme which would see key excelling sporting associations under the NSA enjoying exchange programmes outside the country to further enhance their skills.

Rev. Quarcoo, on his part, was extremely grateful to the NSA boss for making sure the team made it to the competition and assured him of more success from table tennis in the coming year.
