The Vice Rector of Takoradi Polytechnic, John Frank Eshun has pledged the institutions’ commitment to train both certificate and non certificate holders in the oil and gas industry.

This, he said will help achieve excellence in manpower training and action research in order to provide support to industry and commerce in the areas of human resource and information development.

Speaking to the Times in Accra yesterday, Mr Eshun said the institution has put in place adequate measures to train students in special programmes including welding (City and Guilds), American Welding Society (AWS) certificate, Aircraft maintenance (AMI of Florida) and logistics and transport (CILT of UK).

He said “the institution currently partners with other oil companies in and out of the country, to train the best personnel in the industry.

Mr Eshun mentioned painting decorating and, fashion design, intermediate and advanced levels, as some of the non-tertiary programmes in the institution.

He stressed that the institution’s mission, as outlined in the Polytechnics Act 2007, to provide tertiary education through full time courses in the fields of manufacture, commerce, science, technology, applied arts and social science as well as to encourage study and research in technical subjects at tertiary level would not be overlooked.

Mr Eshun called on the public especially the people of Takoradi and its environs, to take advantage of the courses in order to be well equipped for employment in the oil and gas business when recession.

He said “since the oil find is in Takoradi, the institution will do everything in its power to ensure that students are given first hand training on the field with enough practical’s to equip them to work effectively”.

Mr Eshun stressed the need for Ghanaians to take advantage of the hydro-carbon resources in the country in the most cost effective manner.

“Since 2007 when oil was discovered in commercial quantity in Ghana, many international oil and gas summits and workshops have been held in the country and nearly all of them have focused on the attraction and promotion of investment in the petroleum sector,” he stated.

He expressed gratitude to Getenergy, a private organisation working to unite all institutions to share knowledge and learn from the experiences of others and avoid the mistakes they made in the oil business in various countries.

“A human development dimension has been introduced onto the international oil and gas conference scene and we are grateful to Getenergy for that positive development,” Mr. Eshun said.
