Some heads of Public Senior High Schools in the country have been indicted for embezzling and misapplying funds meant for the development of their schools.

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, who announced this at Tamale yesterday noted that some heads of schools were misapplying funds without regards to the accounting procedures.

He said the practice could undermine effective teaching and learning in the schools and the development of the country.

Mr. Kan-Dapaah was speaking at the opening of a three-day public sitting of the PAC at Tamale to consider the Auditor General’s report on pre-tertiary educational institutions in northern Ghana.

Heads of 41 public schools comprising four teacher training colleges and 37 second cycle institutions from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions are to appear before the Committee to answer questions relating to their finances.

Mr. Kan-Dapaah expressed worry that most of the heads were engaged in embezzlement, misappropriation of funds and high charges of school fees and levies.

He stressed that the level of corruption, misuse and abuse of public funds in the public schools cannot be overlooked and, indicated the committee’s readiness to call for the prosecution of all officials engaged in the practice.

“This committee would not hesitate to recommend to the appropriate authorities the prosecution of all heads and bursars who are proved to have embezzled school funds”, the chairman emphasised.

Mr. Kan-Dapaah explained that, the exercise was an initiative to ensure corruption free society and warned the heads of educational institutions to desist from infringing on the laws of the country.

He said it was time for all public officials to desist from misusing public funds, and thereby, advised heads of the public schools in the country to abide strictly to the directives of the Ghana Education Service on the use of funds.

Mr. Kan Dappah said Parliament was determined to assist government to succeed in the fight against corruption hence the measure to check probity and accountability in public institutions, stressing that “Ghana is in a new era where government would not compromise on any move that would create room for corruption”.
