Seven teachers in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region have taught for between one and two years without salary.

The teachers were appointed and posted to various schools in the district and have been teaching without salary for periods ranging between one and two years.

Six of them completed Training College in 2008 and posted to teach while the other, a graduate teacher was appointed and posted in May 2009.

These came to light, when the district chief Executive (DCE) for Nadowli Mr. Abu Kansangbata in the company of the Regional Director of Education, Mr. Fabian Belieb and the district Director of Education for Nadowli, Mrs. Mary-Grace Bonye paid a surprise visit to the Sankana Junior High School here on Tuesday.

The DCE was on a tour of selected educational institutions to assess challenges facing them and to seek solutions to enhance effective teaching and learning in schools.

Briefing the team on the plight of the six teachers, Mr. Desmond Kunveng of the Samatigu Junior High School (JHS) said he and his colleagues have been teaching for the past two years without salary.

He said he has been living on an allowance of only GFHC50 a month, which was woefully inadequate to feed him and his family.

“I am married and have a family to take care of. How can I live on GH¢50 a month? We have sacrificed enough and something must be done about our plight,” he urged.

Mr Kunveng said several attempts and presentations made to the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Services (GES) to address the issue had proved futile.

He appealed to the DCE and the Regional Director of Education to intervene in to save them from further suffering.

For his part, Mr. Albert Volsuuri told the team that he had been teaching for the past one year without pay.

He said he was appointed a graduate teacher in May last year and posted to the Samatigu JHS and had sine thought without salary.

Responding to the teachers plight the District Director of Education for Nadowli, Mrs Bonye explained that her office had on a number of occasions processed Integrated Public Payroll Data (IPPD) forms to get the salaries of the affected teachers input onto the payroll but to no avail.

*0She explained that they were in the process of sending fresh IPPD forms again to Accra and hoped that this time round the salaries of the affected teachers would be rectified to save them from further suffering.

The District Chief Executive asked the Regional Director to Education, Mr. Belieb to act swiftly on the matter and report to him.

He said it was highly unacceptable in this era of computer for teachers to work for two years without pay.

Mr Kansangbata said the ordeal the teachers had gone through was a disincentive for teachers to accept posting to rural areas.

He asked, “if you accept postings to the rural area and you teach for two years without pay how would others be encouraged to accept postings to such areas.”

The DCE commended the affected teachers for their patience and endurance and promised to show personal interest in the matter to ensure that they are paid.
