THE sale of portions of the land acquired by the government in 1979 for the Weija Irrigation Project is illegal, the Nii Arde Nkpa family, has declared after a family council meeting at Kokrobite.

The head of the family, Nii Ayinsah Sasraku III, who is the custodian of Nii Arde Nkpa family lands, has not disposed off any government land to developers, a statement issued after a council meeting said.

Nii Arde Nkpa family are the owners of Kokorbite lands which include Tackieman/Tuba, Langma and parts of the Iron City which have been registered by a statutory declaration as LR 2660/76 at the Land Title Registry on July 29, 1976.

Nii Ayinsah Sasraku said these lands are administered by the head of family and principal elders and not a chief because the lands are family lands and not stool lands.

He said in 1979, the Government acquired 2,746.9 acres of the land from the family under an executive instruments EI.160 and EI.161 for irrigation and faming purposes.

The family, he said, is fully aware that since its acquisition, the government had neither made full use of the total acreage nor paid compensation for it.

The family head said it came to their notice since 2004 that non-members of the family had been selling portions of the acquired lands to individuals and private developers and the family has complained to the government over this practice.

Nii Sasraku said the family was aware of the government’s intention to reclaim its lands for the irrigation project and has been serving notice since June 2010.

“The family sympathises with those whose houses have been demolished, but we want to state that the family is not involved in the sale of those lands to the developers.

“It is unfortunate that the private developers were misled by those who sold the land to them because they were fully aware that those lands have been acquired by the government,” the family head emphasised.

Nii Sasraku said; “the family would like to place on record that it has not until now delegated anyone to speak on its behalf. The public should, therefore, disregard any promises of replacements made in the name of Nii Arde Nkpa family of Prenor, James Town.
