From next Academic year, students in Ghana from primary to the Senior High School level will begin the study of Road Safety as part of the Ghana Education Service academic curriculum.

The subject will be examinable at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) level.

The collaboration which is between the Ghana Road Safety Commission (GRSC) and Ghana Education Service (GES) is meant to inculcate positive road user’s attitude in the Ghanaian child.

In an interview with the Times yesterday, ACP Victor Tandoh, former boss of Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service, currently with the NRSC said the project is being funded by DANIDA, the Danish development Agency.

He said in that regard, he said the NRSC with the support of DANIDA has completed the development of Road Safety Manuals and textbooks for teachers and basic school pupils to facilitate the teaching of road safety in the schools.

Mr Tandoh said the concept behind the project is to offer the children the opportunity to be abreast with road safety in terms of their being a pedestrian, bicycle rider, and passenger so as to reduce the risk of getting involved in a crash.

He said that apart from that, the children will also be offered the opportunity to learn about vehicle components, especially at the SHS level to be conversant with the vehicle.

Mr Tandoh said when the Children are able to capture these rudiments of vehicle and road safety, they will be well equipped to have positive compliance attitude when on the road in the future.

He said the education will also put them in a better shape to pass the various test which is required before one is given a licence in the future.

He Tandoh said the NRSC is also looking at the long term benefit where a well educated populace on road safety could lead to a significant reduction in road crashes.

“He said the NRSC main target is to reduce road crashes to a single digit by the year 2015” and these can be achieved if we start and sustain the “catch them young” project.
