The chairman of the Governing Council of the Accra Polytechnic, Prof. Joshua Alabi, has urged lecturers to place high premium on publishing their research projects in recognised journals to enrich their career and contribute to the wider world of knowledge.

“It is your ground breaking research projects and innovations which will accord you the needed respect in the academia,” he advised the lecturers.

He expressed these sentiments, when he addressed the maiden internal research conference of the Accra Polytechnic on Tuesday, on the theme, “Building our capacity in research for national development.”
About 29 research papers on various topics were presented and discussed.

The occasion served as a platform for the academic staff to come together and share results of various works they have undertaken and to fine-tune them for the benefit of industry, Metropolitan/Municipal/District Assemblies, government institutions and non-governmental organisations, for the growth and progress of the country.

Prof. Alabi, who is the rector of the Institute of Professional Studies in Accra, noted that the conference was long overdue and should have commenced years back when the polytechnics were officially accorded tertiary status.

He, therefore, commended the organisers of the event and encouraged them not to relent in their efforts “but continue to organise such research conferences to enable lecturers to peer-review and fine-tune their research work towards national development.”

Prof. Alabi noted that research and publication of results were the second core function of the teaching staff and encouraged the academic staff to attend research conferences.

“Research enables you to acquire more knowledge, improves upon your writing skills, memory, and increases your vocabulary, so that you also transfer that knowledge to the students that you teach,” he reminded the lecturers.

He intimated that, it was the determination of the governing council to ensure that Accra Polytechnic succeeded in its resolve to provide opportunities for skill training and applied research.

By providing the resources for research, it is expected that the academic staff will engage in more client-driven research, which will assist people to improve upon their performance, generate funds for the Polytechnic and improve the know-how of the lecturers and students, he added.

Prof. Alabi, therefore, entreated the teaching staff to engage in research problems relevant to Ghana’s market place.

He further urged them to form project teams and collaborate with other established institutions and industry “to ensure quality and adherence to standards.”

Prof. Alabi reminded the lecturers that the academic standards and levels of achievements necessary for their promotions also depended on the number of publications done.

“I have no doubt you will compare notes and produce useful publications, which will be to your advantage and benefit Ghana as a whole,” he stressed.

Prof Alabi urged the lecturers to be innovative and engage in practical-oriented programmes that would equip students with the requisite skills, creative spirits, competence and expertise to help in the growth of industry and commerce in the country.

He said their endeavours were anchored in the policy orientations of the government which place greater emphasis on science, technical, vocational education and training.

The rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Festus Addo-Yobo, said the polytechnic has set up a Research and Innovation Centre to promote creativity and research within the various faculties and departments.

He stressed the need for the academic staff to be aware of the competitive nature of the world of the academic, both locally and internationally.

Dr. Addo-Yobo urged them to enhance their skills by engaging in continuous research into some of the pertinent problems facing the country and the world at large.

He assured that, the Polytechnic will encourage academic competitiveness and creativity among the staff by instituting research bursaries and awards at the appropriate levels, for those who demonstrate the right levels of critical thinking and power.
