It was all thrills and excitement in the maiden edition of the Private Schools Football Gala as talented juvenile soccer stars invaded the Lizzy Sports Complex on Friday to battle for honours on behalf of their respective schools.
Themed, “For the Game; For the Youth”, the tournament, which was organized to promote healthy competition among the private schools, saw 26 schools from the Greater Accra Region playing for an all-enviable first place trophy in the under-12 and under-16 categories.
In the under-12 category, hosts, Lizzy Sports, after going behind early in the prelims managed to rally and bulldoze their way into the semis after dispatching off their E’cole Francais counterparts by three goals to one.
East Airport international School, after a 1-1 drawn game, had to settle for a third place play off after losing 3-2 on penalties to Christ the King school in their semi-final clash.
Lizzy sports, following a 2-2 drawn game score line, went on to lift the trophy with another 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Christ the King in the final.
They had earlier brushed off Jack and Jill International School 3-2 on penalties in the semi final, after the game had ended 1-1 in regulation time. The third-place match, Jack and Jill defeated Airport International 3-2 on penalties following a goalless drawn game.
The under-16 category also saw Lizzy Sports emerging 4-0 victors in the final against British International School. Hope for the Future School also landed a third place finish with their exploits after beating their counterparts from New Nation School by two goals to nil.
At the end of the completion, Nana Anim Bediako of East Airport International School and Francis Odei of Lizzy sports were both awarded Most Valuable Players in the under-12 and under-16 categories respectively.
