Participate In Campaign Against Child Labour - E.T. Mensah

The Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Enoch T. Mensah, has urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) to actively participate in the campaign against child labour in the country.

“He said as administrators at the grass roots they have to take full control of child labour issues so that collectively they can prescribe solutions toward ending worst forms of child labour by 2015.”

Mr. Mensah said this at the opening of a three-day capacity building workshop for members of the National Steering Committee of Child Labour (NSCCL) at Dodowa.

The workshop was aimed at building capacity for members on causes and solutions to the problem as well as master the acts of report writing on achievements and challenges.

He said the fight against the worst forms of child labour cannot be won if the root cause of the problem which is poverty is not diagnosed and the appropriate medication prescribed.

“This can only be done by natives of the communities where the practices have prevented children from gaining their full potentials,” Mr. Mensah said.

The Minister explained that the steering committee would have to work overtime in collaboration with the district assemblies so that together they can come out with packages to empower women who would in turn feed and clothe their families.

He appealed to religious organizations to open up business ventures for members to empower them economically.

The Deputy Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs (MOWAC) Hajia Hawawu Boya Gariba said child labour activities are gradually weakening the countries future prospects and called for strict law enforcement to curb the menance to ensure that programmes designed to rehabilitate rescued children are fully implemented.

The project officer of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Emmanuel Mensah urged stakeholders to double their efforts to end this global cancer.

He reiterated the ILO’s commitment to increase support for programmes designed to increase the campaign against child labour activities.

The Dangme West District Chief Executive, Emmanuel Odoi-Lartey in a speech read on his behalf appealed to the committee to allocate roles for the assemblies so that together they can fight the menance adding that “A nation that does not protect its children risk loosing its future generation.”

A Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Eric Appiah urged the committee to adopt decisions that will serve the interest of children adding that “An action plan that is well written and documented is bound to achieve results that would bring relief to its beneficiaries.”
