A world class institution, first of its kind in Africa, for the training of high caliber mathematicians to help solve the country’s teaching and learning of mathematic is to be opened at Saltpond in the Central Region  next September.

The institute, to be manned by high caliber of teachers from across the world including professors from Cambridge, Harvard and Oxford Universities would run Masters and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees in mathematics.

Professor Francis Allotey, world renowned scientist and president of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, who disclosed this to a section of the media at Parliament House yesterday said the institute was being set up with the help of the Canadian government adding that the Canadian government had made available 20 million dollars to a British foundation to support the initiative.

He said the government had pledged to support the institute with the provision of basic infrastructure for the take-off of the institute next September, adding that a team from outside was due in the country for further discussion on the project.

Prof. Allotey said teaching and learning of mathematics “is a major problem facing African countries, we do not have enough mathematicians”.

The former Director of the Ghana Atomic Energy was responding to a question posed to him by the Times about the disturbing trend of students’ poor showing in the country, especially in Mathematics and English after he and chiefs of Ekumfi-Essakyir had conferred with the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman East, George Kuntu-Blankson, on the elevation of Ekumfi-Essakyir to a district assembly.

Prof.Allotey who has just been elected as the Vice- President of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, a London based organisation, said the institute would offer scholarship to highly talented students to pursue the Masters and Ph.D programmes, adding, “once we get them trained, they could help solve the challenges students encounter in learning the subject”.

He said the students would undertake outreach programmes across the country to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in the country.

The world renowed scientist credited for propounding scientific and mathematical theories expressed regret about the dearth of mathematicians in the country explaining that lot of students had been sent abroad for further training  in  mathematics but failed to return  home to impart their knowledge.
