Dr. Kwasi Yeboah-Awusi, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Health Service, (GHS) has expressed optimism about a significant drop in malarial cases in the metropolis this year.

He said with the free distribution of 778,464 insecticide treated nets to 1,370,648 people, representing 80% of the targeted population, the unit expect the number of cases seen at the Out Patients Department (OPD) to substantially reduce.

A total of 28,187 pregnant women and 134,331 children under five years, benefitted from the nets.

Dr Yeboah-Awusi told the Ghana News Agency that the health directorate would carry out follow up visits to make sure that the beneficiaries used them.

The nets are a donation from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Fund in support of the government’s drive to roll back the disease.

Malaria tops the list of the 10 commonly seen cases at the OPDs.

Dr Yeboah-Awusi appealed to all to help fight the disease by destroying the breeding grounds and protecting themselves from mosquitoes.
