G77, a loose coalition of developing nations, including Ghana, seeking to promote their collective economic interests and negotiating capacity at the UN and also China have called for international cooperation and global partnership to help achieve gender equality and empowerment of women.
Ambassador Jorge Arguello, Permanent Representative of Argentina to the UN and Chairman of the Group of 77 who made the appeal at the 55th session of the Commission on the Status of Women here in New York said such a cooperation and parnership should include the fulfilment of all commitments on official development assistance, debt relief, market access, financial and technical support as well as capacity building.
IN that regard, he said, the Group of 77 and China are fully committed to the effective implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in favour of women and girls.
Ambassador Arguello said despite the progress made after the Beijing Conference aimed at advancing the goals of equality development and peace for women, challenges and obstacles remain in the implementation of it's decisions.
He regretted that poverty still constitutes a major challenge for women, especially in developing countries and girls continued to account for the majority of children out of school while majority of women are considered illiterate.
"Women's health continues to face several challenges that could have been overcome.Violence agaist women and girls persists in every country in the world. Women still suffer the consequences of conflicts", he added.
Ambassador Arguello said women economic empowerment is constrained by gender inequalities and disparities in economic power sharing.
He said access to labour markets and to decent work remains particularly limited for women and that they are still underrepresented at senior decision-making levels in all areas.
Ambassador Arguello said institutional mechanisms for gender equality and empowerment of women encounter obstacles which impede full implementation of their mandates.
"Many women face barriers to the enjoyment of their human rights, stereotyped portrayals of women in the media have remained a serious challenge in many countries",he said.
Ambassador Arguello observed that environmental degradation results in negative effects on the life of the population and on women and said girls remain particularly subject to different forms of violence.
He said peace is inextricably linked to equality and development and called on the international community to give priority attention to the plight of women living under foreigh occupation and put an end to their suffering.
