A Philanthropist and Member of Parliament for Assin North, Ken Ohene Agyapong on Thursday dedicated his 51 birthday to the promotion of peace in Dagbon when he donated GH¢10,000 to the Action Youth and Community Development(AYCD), a peace advocacy group in Dagbon in the Northern Region, at a ceremony in Accra.
The AYCD is a made of youth of Dagbon dedicated to restoring peace, genuine reconciliation among the people of Dagbon to pave the way for accelerated development of the region and the donation was meant to help them carry out
advocacy and other programmes gearing at sustainable peace in Dagbon.
Mr Agyapong, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Net 2 TV, said he had decided to dedicate his birthday to the promotion of peace in Dagbon because of his love for sustainable peace in the area for the people to live together as one people.
He urged the youth of Dagbon to guard against selfish politicians who would want to indoctrinate them and use them for their selfish and parochial interest.
Mr Agyapong urged them to take their destiny into their own hands and rest any attempt by anyone to divide them since all Dagonbas, whether Abudus or Andanis are the same people and one family.
The President of AYCD Arafat Abu Zakari praised Mr Agyapong for his act of magnanimity in promoting peace in the area by his commitment to the course of the advocacy group.
He said for well over three decades the region was still confronted with recurrent communal, ethnic, political, land and religious disputes adding that adding that at the centre of the controversy were the youth who were the future
leaders of the country.
He said highly educated and respected people from the area who should know better and be leading the campaign for peace were rather “sitting on the fence, promoting strife, and encouraging the youth to go rampage not for the benefit of the youth or the society but for their own selfish gains.”
Mr Zakaria said the inhabitants of Dagbon and Bawku traditional areas were sitting on time bomb saying that this has been complicated by high-rated political interference that has a criminal aim of divide-and-rule.
He said with collective effort “we can manage to prevent this satanic cycle, we can do this through engagement of the youth in activities and education on peace through programmes and leverage from the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority”.
Kobinah Bomfeh and Anthony Karbo, both Youth organizer of Convention Peoples Party and New Patriotic Party spoke on peace building and the need for peace at the programme that was attended by cross section of Dagonbas.
