An awards ceremony has been held to reward winners of the jubilee first oil National Essay Competition that was launched in November last year.
The competition was launched as
part of activities to celebrate Ghana’s oil find and as an avenue to create awareness amongst the youth about Ghana’s oil sector.
It also sought to harness ideas from the youth of Ghana, about how best to manage the sector for the good of the nation.
Diana Mensah-Ametume from the Airport Junior High School who emerged the winner in the junior category received an educational grant and a cash prize totaling GH¢800.
Justin Bagina from Tono JHS and Xola Quarshie from Osu Home JHS who won the second and third positions respectively both received cash prizes and educational grants.
For the senior category, Joyce Howusu of Alavanyo SHS emerged the winner with an educational grant and a cash prize totaling GH¢800 Didier Tetteh and Abraham Ametepey both of Keta SHS won the second and third positions respectively and received educational grants and cash prizes.
In the tertiary category Mustapha Okyere Darko of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology emerged the winner, winning a laptop and a GH¢ 500 cash prize. Adama Bukari of IPS emerged runner up and also won a laptop and cash prize of GH¢300.
Speaking on behalf of the Jubilee partners, Ms. Elizabeth Bentil of Tullow Oil remarked that the essay competition showcased immense talent amongst the Ghanaian youth. The ideas presented were extremely viable and deeply insightful.
This is an indication that our future generation is ready to tackle issues of national concern thoughtfully. We must churn our more of such programmes to mould them ad frontrunners in issues of national interest.”
Qualified Ghanaian youth residing in the country were encouraged to participate by submitting entries on the essay topics for three categories.
About 700 entries were examined by a panel of experienced judges including Dr. Mawuli Adjei form the English Department of the University of Ghana, Mr. Fritz Baffour, Member of Parliament, Kwaku Sakyi Addo, broadcast journalist and Ms. Elizabeth Ohene, journalist and former Minister of State responsible for Education.
The essay topic for the junior category was: ‘To what use should Ghana put it oil wealth?’
