The Chief and elders of Kokrobite in the Ga South Municipal Assembly have called on the government to investigate circumstances behind widespread demolition of properties belonging to Kokrobite allegedly by men acting on behalf of Nyanyano stool under the leadership of Nana Wiabo and bring the perpetrators to book.
Addressing a press conference at Langma in the Ga South Municipality on Thursday, Daniel Nii Tagoe, Administrator of Nii Arde Nkpe Family Customary Land Secretariat said over 30 houses estimated at the cost of GH10 were demolition on November 30, adding that “it is the latest in a long series of provocations and trespasses to the land in the greater Accra Region in the name of Nyanyano Stool.
Nii Tagoe said the demolition was carried under the protection of police officers in an alleged enforcement and execution of orders of the court in a matter in which neither the Kokrobite stool nor any grantees were a party.
The Administrator claimed there was unwarranted territorial intrusions into the Greater Accra Region by elements in the Central Region saying “the arbitrary drawing up of regional boundaries to the detriment of the people of Kokrobite and kindred people is a case in point.”
“Most importantly the message must go out and clear that stools in the Central Region have no business claiming land rights in the Greater Accra region .we sound a note of caution that this must be taken seriously to avoid any recurrence and ugly consequences,”Nii Tagoe said.
“We have been rendered homeless and helpless, the situation has heightened tension, we have done our best to douse down, we have reported the matter to the police,” he said.
According to Nii Tagoe said “no dingle person has been arrested for the dastardly act, increasing the sense of impunity and untouchability amongst the perpetrators.”
He said the greatest danger was the perception of a breakdown in law and order in the South –West corner of the Greater Accra Region “where almost daily persons engaged in illegal land activities engaged policemen to criminalise what should purely be civil matters.”
“We also want to point out that acts of impunity such as this do not foster social cohesion and ought to be nipped in the bud,”Nii Tagoe said adding “the economic and related cost of this act of gross lawlessness will no doubt impact negatively on the local community and drive away investors.”
