Introduce Programmes To Equip Students With Skills - Annan

THE Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Joseph S. Annan has urged polytechnics in the country to introduce relevant programme that will equip students with skills, competencies and expertise to help in the growth of industry and commence in the country.
 
By designing programmes and courses that meet the current demands, polytechnics will be turning out competent human resource that will propel the country towards socio-economic development, he said when he addressed the fourth congregation of the Tamale Polytechnic at Tamale.

In all 501 graduands received higher national diplomas in various disciplines for the year 2008.
 
Dr Annan said “realizing the indispensable nature of polytechnics to developing talents and skills of the youth for socio-economic growth, the government has resolved to strengthen the operations of the country’s educational system.”
 
He said the government has resolved to strengthen the operations of standing committees of the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training through funding and provision of essential logistics.
 
Dr. Annan challenged the grandaunts to take advantage of the various opportunities being created by the government to establish their own businesses.
 
“Government has youth empowerment at the heart of its business and is ever willing to give you the necessary support in your various fields of endeavour” he emphasized.
 
The chairman of the Polytechnic governing council, Dr.  Seidu Mohammed Mustapha said the new council has as an objective to think globally and act locally in order to assist in solving the many developmental challenges confronting the country.
 
He said the polytechnic is repositioning itself for efficient management.
 
Dr. Mustapha appealed to the government to expedite action on the preparation of a legislative instrument to operationalise the Polytechnic Act, 2007, Act 745.
 
This he explained will further energise the polytechnics towards carving a nitch in the tertiary education arena for themselves in the country.
 
Dr Mustapha commended the government for it’s immerse support to the Tamale polytechnic through the GETFund.
 
The Rector of the Tamale Polytechnic, Alhaji Dr. Yakubu Seidu Peligah, said staff development and research were high on the polytechnic’s agenda towards bettering the institution.
 
He appealed to the government to help save the polytechnics lands from encroachers.
 
He said the polytechnic was in the process of introducing new programmes to meet the demands of contemporary industry.
