This category of ICAG’S diploma programme aimed at training participants to improve on their job performance would contain a comprehensive range of advanced diplomas and would also be the leading diploma in Ghana and West Africa Sub-region.

It would also enable members of the institute play a significant and strategic roles in the economy of Ghana by providing essential services in the areas of accountancy, assurance services, taxation and financial management in both private and public sectors.

Mr. Blankson was speaking at a press conference organized in Accra yesterday as part of the accountancy week to celebrate the practice and profession of accountancy in Ghana under the theme “Accountants: sustaining value creation”.

He said members of the institute have a key responsibility to provide and interpret accounting information and make recommendations based on their integrity and professional judgment.

Mr. Odartey Blankson said the institute by virtue of the Chartered Accountant Act conducts qualifying examinations for membership of the Institute as well as lead and advice organizations of all sizes across every economic sector.

The Institute he said has pursued an agenda of growth whilst ensuring the maintenance of standards and has recorded an appreciable growth in membership over the last few years adding that the number of successful candidates in 2009 was 231 while in 2008 242 students graduated.

The Vice President said in pursuit of the growth agenda the institute has put in place a number of interventions to improve the turnout of accountants whilst maintaining quality. These interventions he said include the production of study manuals, special Saturday revision classes and on site workshop for the student of the institute.

As part of the mandate of ICAG to secure the maintenance of professional standards, Mr. Blankson said the institute adopted and implemented the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for public interest companies in 2008.

Mr. Joseph Blankson said “the council of ICAG in partnership with the controller and Accountant General, the Auditor General and the Ministry of Finance is working on the way forward for the adoption of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) in Ghana. As part of the preparatory work for IPASAS adoption, ICAG organized training the trainer workshop with resource persons drawn from South Africa”.

He stated that the council has adopted the process of instituting “Quality Assurance Review Program” as well as the “Audit Quality Assurance Review manual” which would ensure the adherence to quality standards as prepared by the Association of Accountancy bodies in West Africa (ABWA) and also monitor the standard of practice of all firms and recommend corrective action where necessary.
