IN THE INTEREST OF PEACE

FOR the second time in two years, the popular festival of the Gas, ‘Homowo’ is to be celebrated indoors in areas of conflict in the Greater Accra Region.

This has become necessary to avoid possible disturbances by various factions involved in chieftaincy disputes in almost all the areas.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashietey, who is also chairman of the Regional Co-ordinating Council, has, therefore, directed the people in those areas to confine their celebrations to their disputes compound.

“No traditional ruler in such areas would be allowed to sprinkle the customary corn food, Kpokpoi, to climax the celebration of the festival,” he warned.

The Regional Minister noted that although the RCC had nothing to do with either enstooling or destooling of chiefs and, would not interfere in chieftaincy matters, it would not sit unconcerned for people to cause mayhem under the disguise of the chieftaincy institution.

Indeed, the Regional Co-ordinating Council has acted timely and decisively to avert conflict in the Ga traditional area.

The recent disputes which have characterised the installation of three rival occupants of the Ga Paramount stool, creating anxiety among a lot of people in the Ga traditional area, should serve as a wake-up call for the government to put in place tight security measures to forestall any eventualities.

We are, indeed, happy with the assurance by the Regional Minister that adequate security would be put in place during the festival to be celebrated at different periods by the various tranditional areas in the region, and we hope that this would be carried out without any reservations.

It is regretable that the chieftaincy institution which is an embodiment of unity, is now being used by a few selfish and disgruntled elements to cause disaffection among the people.

Instead of leading the people to engage in meaningful developments, the chieftaincy institution is rather being used as a tool by some ‘so-called’ kingmakers to forment trouble that will disturb the peace of the country.

Some of our chiefs and opinion leaders have also allowed themselves to be used by politicians for their selfish ambitions.

We are pleading with the chiefs and kingmakers in Ga Mashie to allow peace to prevail so that programmes and projects of the government to improve the living conditions of the people, will go on uninterrupted.

The chieftaincy institution is a sacred one and we need to protect and guard it for posterity’s sake.
