The Minister of Chieftaincy and Culture, Mr. Alexander Asum-Ahensah, has called on religious bodies to help tackle the increasing rate of moral degeneration in the country.

“It is evident that our once God fearing society is gradually turning into a lawless and perverted society, very reminiscent of what happened in biblical Sodom and Gomorrah,” he said.

Speaking at the 38th Annual General Council meeting of the Church of Pentecost in Accra on Thursday, Mr. Asum-Ahensah challenged the Pentecost Church to help transform the society in the image of Christ by setting new standards that would please God.

Mr. Asum-Ahensah commended the Pentecost Church for its role in the development of the country in the areas of education and healthcare.

“I am particularly impressed by the church’s healthcare facilities which consist of a hospital, six clinics and a polyclinic,” he said.

The Chairman of Pentecost Church, Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah, in his state of the church address said the Church had 1,618,561 members in 11,495 local congregations in Ghana.

The figure, according to Apostle Onyinah, represented seven per cent of the entire population of Ghana.

“This means the church cannot be ignored in national issues,” he said, adding, “whatever decision is taken by the church may impact the Ghanaian society.”

The church, he said, also increased its international branches from 69 countries to 78 countries.

He said new churches had been opened in countries like Tunisia, Haiti, Malaysia, Thailand, Ecuador, among others.

Apostle Onyinah said the church opened 180 new assemblies in 2009 against 135 in 2008, representing 33 per cent increase.

Pentecost Church, he said, had also made donations to the Ghana Heart Foundation, orphanages, psychiatric hospitals, among others.

He advised all Christians and religious people to help transform th country with their respective religious values and principles.

The success story of the Church of Pentecost as an African church that is completely self supporting, according to him, indicated that Africans could make it irrespective of the socio-economic challenges.

The Council meeting was attended by church members from all over the country and representatives from other countries.
