The government is considering reviewing the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) to ensure that schools, in deprive rural areas in particular where the3re are under enrolment are covered under the progamme.

Currently, it appears the programme is being implemented in some urban schools with full enrolment figures, but this defeats the purpose of the programme, Mr. Joseph Yieleh – Chireh, Minister of Local government and Rural Development told the “Times “on Tuesday.

Mr. Yieleh – Chireh, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development told the “Times” on Tuesday.

Mr. Yieleh – Chireh was visiting schools in the Ga East Municipality to observe the children at lunch under the GSFP, following recent incident of food poisoning in a number of schools there.

He said some schools in Greater Accra Region and Ashanti where the programme benefitted more than 40 per cent; it was dear that children were not in school because they lacked basic necessity such as proper feeding.

Mr. Yieleh – Chireh said the programme which began in 2005 was supposed to have ended this year. However, the government wanted to critically analyze its impact and focus on the rural poor to boost enrolment.

He said his ministry was also in talks with supporting partners to determine how the next programme could be rolled out without its attendant bottlenecks.

He said there were no plans to extend the programme to the Junior High School level, since the idea of the concept was to boost enrolment at the lower level.

Mr. Yieleh –Chireh said reports reaching the ministry indicated that in some areas, some pupils did not want to be promoted to junior high because by that they would miss the opportunity of being , fed free at school .

Heads of school he said have therefore been advised to watch out for such pupils who might like to take undue advantage of the situation.
