The government has approved a GH˘17 subsidy for the registration of each candidate for the 2011 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
With the subsidy, parents will now pay GH˘7 of the GH˘24 approved as the new registration fee. The subsidy covers pupils in both public and private basic schools.
The acting Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in charge of Quality and Access, Stephen Adu, who made this known to the Times, said “this (new registration fee) is to correspond with the West African Examinations Council upward adjustment in the entry fees for the 2011 BECE to be conducted in April next year.”
He said the subsidy is to reduce the financial burden on parents.
Mr. Adu said WAEC had already started the process of registering the candidates for the examination and was hopeful that by the end of December, the registration would be completed.
He cautioned heads of schools, especially the private ones to strictly adhere to the approved fees and not to collect anything outside the approved subsidy for the registration of candidates for the examination.
“Heads who want to add cost to cover candidates’ photographs, bank drafts, mock examination and transportation, should seek the consent of the GES and parents.
“Schools are not allowed to unilaterally fix other fees outside the approved fees. Schools and their parent-teacher associations should come together and take decisions on such issues,” he stressed.
The approved entry fees for the 2010 BECE was GH˘20 out of which the government subsidy was GH˘14 while parents paid GH˘6.
