Government To Revamp All Science Resource Centres

Government is to commence a programme to revamp all science resource centres in selected schools in the country to give impetus to the quest to promote the teaching and learning of science, Vice-President John Mahama has announced.

Besides the training of science teachers to man the centres, he said, the government would also provide funds for running them including the provision of chemicals, computers and their accessories, and buses.

Vice-President Mahama disclosed this at the 43rd Speech and Prize Giving Day of the Labone Senior High School in Accra.

The occasion, which climaxed the 60th anniversary of the school, was on the theme,
60 years of quality secondary education: The contribution of Labone Senior High to Ghana’s human resource development and beyond.”

Vice-President Mahama also announced that as part of the government’s bold policy initiatives for the educational sector this year, it would ensure that each constituency in the country has a senior high school.

In response to appeals by the school’s authorities he said the full boarding status of the school had been restored to, among other things, to avoid student lateness and absenteeism.

Mr. Mahama promised that the government would take steps to ensure that the school saw a significant improvement in its infrastructure programmes such as the construction of a new dormitory block to expand the intake of students.

He advised the authorities to embrace ICT in their teaching and learning since the world was now a global village, where computer literacy was critical. He pledged five computers to assist school’s ICT programme.

The Vice-President advised students to take career guidance and counseling seriously and also to select courses they have a comparative advantage to pursue.

He urged the school to sustain and further enhance its academic record.

The Headmistress of the school Mrs Joyce Ossei Agyekum said the academic standards of the school were appreciating, saying, teachers’ commitment to duty resulted in an impressive performance by the students in the 2008 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results.

She appealed to parents and guardians to create a conducive environment for students to study while in the house.

The headmistress said the school, which started as a private school with a student population of eight in January 1949, now has a student population of 1,600 comprising including 711 girls.

As part of the occasion, staff and students were given awards for their meritorious service and their exceptional academic performance respectively. A multi-purpose sports court was also commissioned.
