The Conference of Rectors of Polytechnics (CORP) has called on educational authorities to give polytechnics the mandate to issue their own Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) certificates.
The authorities concerned are the National Council for Tertiary Education, the National Accreditation Board, the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations and other supervisory agencies.
According to the chairman of CORP, Rev. Prof Daniel Adjepong Nyarko, “the Polytechnics have now developed, academic quality has been achieved and therefore they should be given the mandate to issue their own B.Tech certificates”.
“Gone are the days when polytechnics were known for incessant strike actions,” he added.
He was speaking at the opening of the 83rd regular meeting of the CORP in Koforidua on Monday.
The purpose of the meeting was to deliberate on issues concerning polytechnics and allow stakeholders and government, familiarize themselves with their operations.
Rev. Prof. Nyarko said rectors of the polytechnics have teamed up with various unions and are working hard in unity, to forge ahead and create safe and conducive campuses, for academic work.
“Polytechnics now stand for development and practical education for the Ghanaian youth, therefore the authorities should team up with the Rectors as they strive to ensure that, the average Ghanaian Polytechnic graduate comes out with the necessary skills, useful for the development of the nation.
Rev. Prof. Nyarko used the occasion to appeal to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to resolve unforeseen problems which may arise in the course of migration of the polytechnics onto the Single Spine Salary Structure.
That, he said, would avert crises on campuses, with what happened on the GES front in mind.
