German Builds Schools For Four Communities

A German philanthropist, Cornelia Woolfing has constructed a Kindergarten block for the children of Sovie, in the Kpando district.

The project, which was commenced last year at the cost of GH¢60,000, is expected to minimise overcrowding in makeshift kindergartens.

Until the construction of the block, the children studied in a teacher’s bungalow.

Another German Philanthropist, Axel Schults, who accompanied Mrs Woolfing to Ghana to commission the block, donated GH¢2,000 towards the purchase of furniture, office equipment and education materials.

Through her humanitarian services to four traditional areas, namely, Saviefe, Akrofo both in the Ho municipality, Alavanyo in the Hohoe municipality and Sovie in the Kpando district, Mrs Woolfing was five years ago enstooled Mamaga Akosua I, (development queenmother) of the four communities Saviefe, Sovie, Akrofo Alavanyo Development Union (SASADU).

Even though the traditional areas migrated from Notsie in Togo to settle in various areas, the common cultural values and norms have strengthened the unity and peace amongst the people.

A colourful durbar of chiefs and their retinue was held to commission the project at Sovie at the weekend.

In his inaugural address, Joseph Amenowode, the regional Minister, acknowledged the efforts of the people of the town and collaboration with development partners towards the construction of foundation of education.

“The development of basic educational facilities in each of our communities is a shared-responsibility between the community, the central government and other development partners,” he said.

Mr Amenowode urged communities to continue to sustain their communal spirit of self-help to complement governments efforts to improve the living standards of the people.

He directed the Regionanl and District Directorates of Education to provide inputs to facilitate effective and efficient running of the Kindergarten.

Mamaga Akosua, underscored the importance of education, which she said is crucial to the development of any nation.

She urged parents to focus on early childhood development so as to secure the growth and development of their children as future leaders.

Ms Dora Agorso, a circuit Supervisor, expressed concern about the inability of school children to read which is a bane for the district in the Basic Education Certificate Examination over the years.

Togbe Kofi Nyarku VII, Chief of Sovie, urged parents to avail themselves to Government’s interventions in the education sector to develop their children in an atmosphere of trust, truth, honesty, moral uprightness and ethical values.

In an address read on his behalf by Francs Amenu the District Coordinating Director, Francis Ganyaglo, Kpando District Chief Executive, said the assembly has approved the construction of five kindergarten blocks in the district to promote early childhood development.

Togbega Tsidze Attakora VII, Paramount Chief of Alavanyo traditional area, cautioned the leadership of the union to desist from fault-finding, however, encourage constructive criticisms to ensure unity, peace, harmony and growth to impart positively on its membership.
