Ga East Municipal Assembly, La Nkwantanang Chiefs Resolve Impasse Amicably

The Chiefs and people of La Nkwatanang and the Ga East Municipal Assembly have amicably resolved an impasse over the temporary occupation of part of the La Nkwantanang cluster of schools at Madina by pupils of REDCO Basic School.

The assembly last week, allocated part of a one-storey classroom block of the La Nkwantanang cluster of schools to pupils of the REDCO Basic School because of the poor nature of the school’s classroom structures.

This move apparently did not go down well with the youth of the community who stormed the school on Monday morning and drove out teachers and pupils of the REDCO School.

The irate youth of La Nkwantanang, who claimed that the move by the assembly was “diabolical and intended to change the name of the school,” said they did not want the name “REDCO” to appear on their school compound.

Consequently, Municipal Chief Executive, John Quao Sackey, the Member of Parliament for the area, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho and the District Director of Education, Mrs. Cynthia Bosomtwi–Sam, on Tuesday, held a crunch meeting with the chief, elders, youth and members of the La Nkwantanang community to resolve the impasse.

Mr. Sackey described the action taken by the youth as unfortunate and acknowledged that the decision to relocate REDCO school was not properly communicated to them.

He explained that the movement of the REDCO pupils was only a temporary measure and therefore appealed to them to let peace to prevail ‘so that together we could build a strong and prosperous community’.

Mr. Sackey said the assembly was compelled to allocate part of the school to REDCO Basic School because the school’s existing classroom posed a danger to the Staff and pupils.

“We do not have to sit down for any mishap to occur before we start counting the losses,” he said.

He appealed to the community to assist the schools to achieve a 100 per cent academic record so that they can take over the future development of the municipality.

Alhaji Sorogho advised the youth to partner the management of the schools towards resolving the numerous problems facing the education sector in the area.

He said he would use part of his Common Fund to procure furniture for the school, adding that a fence wall would be constructed round the school to stop traders from invading the school on market days.

The Chief of La–Nkwantanang, Nii Nikoe Jonas, earlier at a news conference on Saturday, described the action of the assembly as perpetuation of injustice, saying what happened was as a result of miscommunication.
