Parents have been advised to ensure the growth and development of their children to help reduce juvenile crimes in the country.
They, (children) must be provided with the materials that they would need to help in their development to become good leaders in future.
DSP Bismark Agyapong, a clinical psychologist at the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), gave the advice at an outreach programme organized by the Unit on Wednesday in conjunction with Child Rights International, a non-governmental organization for students of St. Paul Catholic Junior High School in Accra on Wednesday.
DSP Agyapong said lack of supervision and care for children push them to the streets and they end up indulging in criminal activities like armed robbery and teenage pregnancy.
The clinical Psychologist, urged children to shun bad company especially their peers and concentrate on their studies to help them achieve their goals in future.
Chief Inspector Irene Oppong, Greater Accra Regional, Public Relations Officer of DOVVSU in her address said the outreach programme would be a nationwide to help educate children on their rights.
She said if care was not taken to educate children on juvenile delinquencies in the country the phenomenon will increase.
“It would take us by stock if proper attention is given to children “she added.
C/Insp Oppong said the programme would be extended to schools in other parts of such as Kaneshie, New Town, Mpoase, Nima and Dansoman which had been identified as areas which has increased cases of child conflicts.
She said in the year 2008 to 2009 the unit recorded 50 cases which involved children in conflicts, adding about fifteen of them have so far been prosecuted.
The PRO said their offences were stealing of money, threatening and sexual offences.
ASP Cephas Arthur of the PRO Division at the Police Headquarters said children must be taught to know the consequences of their actions and what can be done to prevent crimes in the country.
