THE government recently announced the creation of 42 new districts across the country, thus, bringing the number of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to 212.

As a way of strengthening the new districts, a seed cash of GH¢ 1 million has been voted for each of the newly decentralized administrations.

The creation of the new districts followed persistent agitations from the people to the government, to ensure the equitable development of all parts of the country.

We commend the government for acting on the numerous appeals by the people for district status, and hope other requests would be critically examined and addressed in due course.

We also hope that the problems emanating from the creation of some of the districts that have generated tension in some parts of the country, would quickly be resolved in order not to create unnecessary confusion among the people.

It is not the best for the youths of some areas to take the law into their hands and engage in acts which could undermine the peace the country is currently enjoying.

Indeed, the smooth administration of governance depends on how the district assemblies perform at the local levels.

The assemblies serve as a link between the government and the people at the grassroots. In effect, they are responsible for the implementation of government policies and programmes at the local levels. Therefore, the government relies heavily on the assemblies to execute development projects across the country.

That is why the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, are expected to be up and doing and ensure the smooth administration of their districts.

We hope that the government would speed the process of appointing chief executives to the new districts to facilitate development at the local levels.

We also wish to remind the chief executives of their obligations and advise them not to breach the financial regulations of the assemblies, either for personal gain or through negligence.

We hope that the seed money allocated to each of the new districts would be used judiciously so as to ensure that the assemblies take off smoothly.
