Elders Have Contributed To Indiscipline In Society - Lecturer

A lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Seth K.A. Danso, has attributed the spate of indiscipline in the society to the failure of the elderly to correct the wrongs of the youth.

This, he said, had permeated the institutions of learning where students engaged in dubious means to acquire certificates instead of acquiring knowledge.

“Sorry if I should seem to be accusing us all, the older ones, of a deterioration in the general discipline in our schools.

“However, we should call a spade a spade; more often than not we have not been good mentors to our younger ones, and there is a need for change,” he stressed.

Addressing the staff and students at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Akwamuman Senior High School in the Asuogyaman District at the Weekend, Professor Danso condemned the “abominable practice” of students offering cars and other expensive gifts to tutors and lecturers to acquire certificates.

“Impersonations are quite common and some students are prepared to go to all lengths, including offering expensive cars to impersonators and people who can illegally assist in cheating for them to acquire degrees rather than acquire the needed knowledge,” he stated.

But Prof. Danso told students, “there is no short-cut to success. The only way is to study hard.”

He said indiscipline in schools could be curbed if parents spent quality time with their children, by knowing their urgent needs and finding solution to them.

The Headmaster, Mr K. Akyampon-Sakyi appealed to parents to fulfil their financial obligations by paying their children’s school fees promptly.

He commended both the teaching and the non-teaching staff as well as the students for their support in ensuring a conducive atmosphere for academic work.

Nana Osae Nyampon VI, Kamena-Manhene, and Chairman of the function pledged the support of the traditional authorities in the development of the school.

He asked the old students to make their experience and expertise available to the school for the benefit of the present generation of students.

Prizes were awarded to deserving tutors, non-teaching staff, students and former headmasters, including Mr Felix Essah-Hienno, immediate past headmaster and current headmaster of Okuapeman Senior High School, for their hard work and dedicated services to the school.
