THE Minister of Education, Mr. Alex Tetteh Enyo has said that education continues to play a vital role not only in the lives of individuals who pursue it but also to the socio-economic development of the country as a whole.

He has therefore urged individuals who have the desire to further their education not to hesitate but strive to do that and even to the highest.

Mr. Tetteh-Enyo said this when the leadership of the National Council of Distance Education Students’ Association called on him to discuss issues pertaining to distance education in the country and how to improve on the wellbeing of the pursuers.

He said that realising the desire of people particularly workers to further their education, the government intiated the distance education programme, nothing it is highly patronized because of its flexibility.

The Minister said government will continue to initiate laudable programmes that will be in the interest of the people, especially those who desire to pursue their education.

He said the government is also taking steps to establish satelite campuses to enable teachers, workers and all who desire to further their education to achieve their dream.

With respect to the teacher training colleges, the minister said government is providing the institutions with requisite facilities so that they can become centres of excellence.

Measures are also being taken to connect all the universities, polytechnics and teacher training colleges where there can be video conferencing on subjects or courses. This, he said, will reduce the frequent travels of lecturers from one institution to the other to lecture or students who commute for lectures from one point to the other.

Speaking on: ‘enhancing quality distance education in Ghana; the way forward 2010’ the President of the Association, Patrick Ahadzie called for full scholarship to be given to teachers who pursue various course under the programme.

He said some teachers are either intimidated or humiliated simply because of their desire to further their education with some facing several punishments, including transfers.

This, Mr. Ahadzie said, does not auger well for societal development and growth and appealed to the minister to look at that area critically.

‘There must be full government scholarship for teachers who pursue diploma and degree courses in Basic Education with the Centre for Continuing Education of the University of Cape Coast.

Currently, Mr. Ahadzie said the total enrolment of students for three programmes of the Distance Education Department at the university have been overwhelming.

Mr. Ahadzie noted that the programme among other things, also relieves government of heavy financial burden in terms of facilities like lecture halls, hostels and other campus facilities.
