THE Chief Executive Officer of the National Drivers Academy, Mr. Etse Ladzekpo, has said that it is necessary for drivers to go for refresher courses to familiarise themselves with modern rules in driving.

The training, he said, is also necessary in view of new models of vehicles that are being introduced into the system daily.

Speaking to the ‘Times’ in Accra yesterday, Mr. Ladzekpo said drivers like any other professionals, contribute meaningful to national development, adding that it was always important that they are informed on new developments in driving.

He said he had observed through refresher courses that the Academy organised for drivers that some knowledge that some of them only learn to driver without knowing new skills.

He said apart from drivers who learn drivers who go through training schools, those who learn driving through apprenticeship do not know much about road signs.

Some of the drivers, he stated, were school drop-outs who cannot read and write to saying that in, drivers must first of all consider the fact that the lives of passengers are in their hands.

Mr. Ladzekpo said since the establishment of the Academy last year, it had re -trained a number of drivers and instructors in defensive driving and road signs.

He indicated that it was very important for every prospective driver to enroll in driving schools to learn more on road signs and defensive driving to help reduce the carnage on the roads.

He cited the example of the United Kingdom, where prospective drivers go through rigorous tests before they are allowed to drive.

On the acquisition of driving licenses, Mr. Ladzekpo said he had called for thorough examination of applicants before issuing them with driving licenses.

He also called for a strong political will to clamp down on racketeering vehicles that ply the roads, saying that though the condition of some of the vehicles are so bad, they still ply the roads and wonder how those vehicles acquire road -worthy certificates.
