The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service is to begin a nationwide educational exercise to increase awareness on practices that inhibit the education of the youth, particularly those in basic schools.

This has become necessary because research conducted by the unit has shown that some of the perpetrators are ignorant of the Domestic Violent Act and its repercussions.

The Domestic Violence Act 732, 207, spells out Domestic Violence Acts and Gender based violent acts against girl the child, especially female genital mutilation, forced early marriages among others and how such acts are to be dealt with.

The Co-ordinator of the Unit Mrs. Elizabeth Dasaah told the Times in an interview that the campaign against the child abuse and sexual harassment can only succeed if the youth are properly schooled on their rights and responsibilities.

She stated that DOVVSU will from now liaise with the Girl Child Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure wider coverage towards reaching their intended goals.

Mrs. Dasaah noted that communities where cultural practice such as fishing and farming activities militate against the education of the youth will also be visited to ensure that opinion leaders who are role models are given the necessary support to promote education of the youth.

She said that child-abuse panels to swiftly settle less aggressive cases of child abuse in the communities will be set up while aggressive cases are handed over to DOVVSU for the courts to prescribe the necessary punishment that goes with such offences.

The Coordinator warned that the unit will not take kindly to communities that decide to settle sexual harassment and child abuse cases, at home since some of these practices turn to harm the victims adding “most of these cases if left unreported can lead to infections and bitter memories that hunt the victims far a long time.

She appealed to the Girl Child Unit to furnish DOVVSU, through its district officers, details of their action plans for the year so that plans of both units can take off at the same time when school resumes the next academic year
