The Wa West District Chief Executive, Mr. Seidu Tungbani, has entreated Muslim parents in the country not to deny their children access to Western education.
While admitting that Islamic education is important for the spiritual upliftment of the youth, he believes, it was necessary to blend it with Western education, to enable the children to realise their goals in a secular state like Ghana.
“I entreat you to offer your children both Western and Islamic education. The values and principles taught in Islam will enable our children even to learn better in the secular school setting,” Mr. Tungbani stated, in congratulatory messages to Muslims in the country, with the celebration of this year’s Eid-Fitr, at Wechiau, last Wednesday.
“Though Ghana is not an Islamic state, it did not mean that the youth could not derive benefits from studying Islamic literature and the Arabic language.
“The values, laws and principles in Islam are far reaching and constitute the only basis for a sound blend of western and Islamic education,” he stressed.
Mr. Tungbani said the importance of the fasting must encourage togetherness among all Muslims in the country, adding that “when we pray and break our fast together, we do not discriminate against tribes, the poor, the rich, as well as the learned and uneducated Muslims, and finally fasting also teachers self discipline”.
He admonished the youth not to debase the quality and the religious piety of the Ramadan by going back to commit the same social vices they had used the fasting to ask for forgiveness.
He pledged that the district assembly would complete the local English and Arabic School at Wechiau and again construct a modern three-unit classroom block to enhance teaching and learning of English and Arabic in the district.
