The government yesterday started distribution of free school uniforms to pupils in deprived communities, giving a boost to its efforts at rigorously developing basic education in the country.

The distribution, which was launched by the First Lady, Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, in Kwao-Larbi, a very deprived community in the Awutu-Senya District of the Central Region, is expected to benefit an initial 1.5 million pupils in 77 deprived districts across the country as part of measures to enhance school enrolment.

Launching the programme, Mrs Mills said government was aware of the challenges confronting quality education delivery and would not relent in its efforts to provide the necessary facilities such as classrooms, teaching and learning tools to improve the primary education system.

She said the launch at which about 300 children who received the uniforms, was indicative of the government’s determination to ensure that all children had good access to quality education.

“Education is a right,” she said, and expressed the optimism that the various initiatives by government, such as the increase in the capitation grant, provision of free exercise books and uniforms, would relieve poor parents of the burden of financing the children’s education.

She said the school uniform programme, which came closely after the distribution of 42 million exercise books to pupils, would also be followed by provision of classroom blocks to deprived communities as part of a comprehensive plan to improve education across the country.

The First Lady urged all stakeholders to support the government in its drive to revamp the education sector, saying “no one can sit on the fence.”

The beneficiary schools in the district were Kwao-Larbie Anglican Primary, where studies are conducted under trees, Akrampa Anglican, Choechoe Anglican, Abenful, Ahenfia, and Bontrase District Assembly Primary schools.

Before the pupils changed into the new uniforms, most of them had uniforms that were in bad conditions while others did not have any at all.

Ms. Ama Benyiwa Doe, Central Regional Minister, bemoaned the poor primary education system in the region which had numerous high ranking tertiary and secondary schools.

“The development of this region should be a challenge to all stakeholders,” she stated.

She stressed the importance of the school uniform programme to the government, saying the launch marked another milestone in the country’s quest for growth.

Additionally, she gave assurance that the programme would be sustained to create a good environment for education in deprived areas.

As a way of complementing government’s efforts, Ms. Benyiwa Doe urged parents and guardians to support by investing more time and resources in the education of their wards.

Nai Abokuade Wyettey Agyemang Otabi III, chief of the area, lauded the programme and expressed gratitude for the choice of Awutu Senya for the launch, which according to him, would expose the officials to the deplorable educational facilities in the area.
