THE issue of the Fulani herdsmen has taken another dimension with, the reported killing of 13 herdsmen by a group of unidentified youth at Zamanshigu, a farming community near Gushiegu in the Northern Region on Wednesday.
Seventeen other Fulanis who sustained varied degrees of injury are on admission at the Gushiegu Hospital.
The police said they could not put a finger on the motive behind the killings and no one has been arrested yet.
We condemn the act of lawlessness which has led to the killing of these herdsmen.
It is not right to take people’s lives unjustifiably and we appeal to the law enforcement agencies, to pursue the matter.
Even though we are against the atrocities caused by Fulani herdsmen with their cattle in various communities across the country, we do not think that the savage manner in which the perpetrators took the lives of the herdsmen should be tolerated.
This country is governed by law and, therefore, people who flout the law must be dealt with, no matter how justifiable their action may seem to be.
It is a fact that these herdsmen are becoming a nuisance to society, however, in dealing with them, we must exercise maximum restraint in order not to create unnecessary tension between our country and others from where most of these nomads move with their animals, in search of pasture.
Besides, these people are armed and, nobody can discount the possibility of reprisal attacks on the communities, by them.
Be it as it may, we believe that the issue of the Fulani herdsmen is now getting out of hand and we call on the government to go beyond measures taken so far to curb their destructive activities and deal with it decisively, once and for all.
The prime responsibility of the government is to protect its people from such wanton destruction as caused by the activities of the herdsmen.
We do not want a spill-over of this terrible situation to other communities in the country. That is why the security agencies must act swifly.
