Dangme West Worried About Fallen Standard Of Education

The Dangme West District Assembly and the District Education Directorate have began broad consultation with stakeholders in deprived communities to address the falling standard of education in those areas.

These follows the revelations that some schools in these deprived communities scored zero per cent in the 2010 Basic Education certificate examination.

Out of the 2006 candidates presented last year for the BECE, only 1019 had between aggregates six and 30.

In 2009, 1201 candidates, representing 55.4 per cent, out of the 2167 candidates presented for the examination passed.

Some of the schools which recorded zero per cent included Djorkpo Roman Catholic D/A, Kpohe D/A and Mampong-Shai D/A Basic Schools.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) Emmanuel Odoi Lartey who visited Djorkpo RC School in the company of the District Director of Education called to interact with the staff and the community towards finding a lasting solution to the problem.

All the 22 candidates the school presented at the 2010 BECE scored zero per cent with the best grade in Mathematics being as eight and 19 others had aggregate nine.

Two candidates had aggregate five as the best in English, one person had three in science and social studies as the best grades.

Mr. Lartey who was not happy at performance called on the teachers to use their professional skills to turn the fortune round the fortune of the school.

“This is not the time to shifts blame but only appealing that you double your efforts towards changing the image of the school,” he added.

He urged parents to take total control of their wards social activities towards ensuring that they stick to their books.

Mr. Lartey said all the assembly will from this year institute lucrative packages for best performing schools and their teachers as well as sustain the best teachers awards.

The District Director of Education Mrs. Ereda Koasi said the directorate will intensify supervision to monitoring to ensure that the district record improves this year adding that “teaching and learning materials would also be provided on schedule for effective delivery.

The Chief of Djorkpo Togbe Agama II appealed to the education authorities to consider Ewe as Ghanaian Language for the pupils since the community is made up of non Dangmes.
