One of Ghana’s illustrious boxing sons, Braimah Kamoko, aka Bukom Banku will be presented with the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) African boxer of the year award at a special dinner and awards ceremony scheduled for the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra on Saturday, November 26.

The event which is being organized by Golden Concept Management International in collaboration with Goldenmike Boxing Promotion is expected to assemble top players in the boxing arena including WBO Africa vice president, Mr. Andrew Smale of South Africa.

Other top personalities expected to grace the occasion includes the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) president, Samir Captan, former WBC world champion, Azumah Nelson, boxing managers and coaches as well as government functionaries.

It is expected to be the crowning moment for the Ghanaian boxer whose exploits in the light heavyweight division caught the attention of technical men that attended the WBO congress in Philippines last month at which he was adjudged the best.

Banku in the year under review annexed the interim WBO Africa light heavyweight crown with a fourth round Tecknical Knockout (TKO) win over Jorge Rodriguez Oliveira from Uruguay and added the WBO Africa title five months later with a unanimous point decision over Vikapita Meroro from Namibia in another explosive bout fought at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

That extended his unbeaten record to 22 and earned him a giant leap in the last WBO ranking, making him the second contender to the light heavyweight title held by Nathan Cleverly from the Great Britain.

Speaking to the Times Sports, Mr. Mike Tetteh, chief executive of Goldenmike Promotion said the evening will be a celebration of Banku’s exploits in the ring, adding that, ‘we hope this will encourage the other boxers to aim higher in the pugilistic sport.”

This, he said, will bolster the confidence of the Ghanaian boxer as he prepare for his last eliminator for a shot at Cleverly’s title early next year possibly in Accra.

Mr. Henry Manly-Spain, head of Banku’s management team was also full of praise for Banku who undoubtedly remains Ghana’s biggest boxing crowd puller and hoped that he remain focused for what he termed the “world title agenda”.

He told the Times that the event will be spiced by music from the Celebrants and will be strictly by invitation.
