A Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Amo-Yarteh last Tuesday sentenced a 27-year old cleaner, Nestor Adongo to 15 years in hard labour for stealing.
The items he stole included a 32” LCD plasma TV, two laptops, a digital camera, eight mobile phones and cash sum to the tune of GH¢52,000 belonging to one Kwadwo Oware, a businessman and a resident of Apire, Kumasi.
Nestor pleaded guilty to all the counts of stealing, unlawful entry and causing unlawful damage that preferred against him and was convicted on his own plea by the court.
Briefing the court, Chief Inspector Sylvanus d’Almeida told the court that Nestor was a resident of Ahinsan a suburb of Kumasi and also a cleaner at the complainant’s shop which located at Adum, the central business district.
He said on January 4, this year, Oware detected that thieves had broken into the shop and made away with a 32 inches plasma television, a digital camera, eight mobile phones and cash in the sum of GH¢32,000.
He said when Nestor was questioned, he denied committing the offence.
On Saturday, January 28, 2012 the convict took advantage of the match between the Black Stars of Ghana at the ongoing African Cup of Nations when everyone’s attention was focused on the said to match to break into the shop again to steal.
According to the police, Nestor used a hammer and a wooden board to jump over the burglar proof, removed the sliding door and gained access to the shop.
However, luck eluded him and caught while at the shop and was handed over to the police.
During a search at his residence at Ahinsan, the police retrieved the 32” plasma LCD TV, five mobile phones, a digital camera belonging to Oware, the complainant and cash amount of GH¢2, 500.00.
