THE nefarious activities of Fulani herdsmen in parts of the country are becoming unbearable as they continue to visit untold hardship on the citizenry.

Recently, these herdsmen were reported to have directed their operation to the country’s highways robbing motorists and passengers at gun-point.

A report from our correspondent at Ho in the Volta Region recently, indicated that the timely intervention of the Dzodze police averted an armed attack by these herdsmen on vehicles plying the Dzodze-Tedzewu road.

The robbers blocked the road and attempted to rob passengers on the vehicles of their personal belongings.

And at Agogo in the Asante Akim North District of Ashanti, our reporter writes that a demonstration by the inhabitants against the activities of Fulani herdsmen degenerated into chaos when they clashed with the police last Friday resulting in the injury of 10 people and three policemen.

According to the report, the incident happened when the police arrested one of the inhabitants during a demonstration against the paramount chief and his elders for allegedly giving their consent to Fulani herdsmen to destroy their farms.

In all humility, some of our traditional authorities have sold their rights to these herdsmen for monetary considerations and they are now trampling on their authority.

Some have allotted farmlands to these herdsmen to graze their animals and have allegedly collected sums of money from them.

The Times vehemently condemns this practice.

It is indeed, shameful that our traditional authorities have stooped so low by entering into negotiations with these herdsmen to use their terrain for their animals only for them to end up destroying the farms of their subjects and molesting them.

These herdsmen are becoming a problem to the society and the earlier something drastic is done to control their nefarious activities the better it will serve this country.

The herdsmen who are said to be armed to the teeth with sophisticated weapons are noted for their brutalities wherever they pitch their camp.

Their behaviour must not be taken lightly especially, when they have in their possession deadly weapons which is an indication that they are not only in the country to graze their animals but to commit atrocities to our citizens.

With the frequent attacks on our people, the Times urges the various district assemblies especially those located at our borders to be on the alert and monitor the movement of any strange convoy in their territory and inform the security agencies for the appropriate action to be taken.

While at it, we appeal to Parliament to take a serious view of the activities of these herdsmen by enacting a law that will regulate their movement in the country before they cause any more harm to the society.

It is sad that these alien herdsmen are taking the hospitality of Ghanaians for granted by engaging in all kinds of negative practices in the country.

The impunity with which they operate should no longer be countenanced. Our security agencies must deal with them before they kill our citizens.

We also want to appeal to the traditional authorities to keep the chieftaincy institution sacred and not to sell their authority for pittance.
