The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has formally admitted 4,437 students to pursue various programmes for the 2011/2012 academic year.
The number is 12.8 per cent less of last year’s admission of 5,081 students.
Of those admitted, 3,972 would pursue undergraduate programmes, 43 for P.hD. and 422 for Masters Programmes.
The Vice Chancellor of UCC, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who administered the matriculation oath, said 91 students, representing 81 per cent of the undergraduate students, were from less endowed schools, the science remedial programme, the mature window and the concessionary placement system.
For the P.hD. programme, there had been an increase of 43 per cent over last year’s admission, while the masters programme had decreased by 19 per cent.
She reiterated the university’s commitment to providing quality education for all students.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the matriculants to devote themselves to learning to their full potential, for the advancement of the society.
She entreated them to adhere to the rules of the university and warned that the institution would not hesitate to deal with those who fell foul of the rules and regulations of the university.
On gender parity, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said there had been a decrease in female enrolment at the undergraduate level.
Such a trend, she said, was affecting the efforts at ensuring gender parity at the undergraduate level and urged females to study hard to meet the cut-off point for admission into the university.
