The Cape Coast Metro Director of Education, Ms. Vivian Etroo, has decried the poor performance of pupils and students despite the growing number of teachers pursuing degree courses in the country’s universities, to upgrade themselves.

According to her, the numeracy and literacy capacity of pupils keep declining as children still lack the basic knowledge of addition and subtraction, as well as the ability to read and write simple sentences.

Ms. Etroo expressed these sentiments at the end of a four-day in-service training workshop for 79 basic school teachers, drawn from the 13 districts of the Central Region, to sharpen their skills to enable them deliver, especially in the areas of science, mathematics, English and ICT, and to keep them abreast of current methods of teaching .

The course was organised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), in collaboration with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation.

Ms. Etroo noted that educational standards had declined “because the children are not getting the required basics in numeracy and literacy to make them perform better” and attributed this to some teachers who only laze about and care less about the welfare of the pupils within the stipulated contact hours.

She deplored the rampant cases of casual leave and excuse duties by many teachers and stressed they were negatively impacting on education delivery.

Ms. Etroo appealed to the GNAT to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to find a lasting solution to these problems in the quest to raise the standards of education in the country.

She appealed to school heads to plan and use the capitation grant judiciously.

The workshop coordinator, Mr John Nyoagbe, who is also a Deputy General Secretary of GNAT, urged teachers to avail themselves of the numerous training opportunities, in the service and keep themselves abreast of modern trends in teaching.

He said GNAT had trained 100 resource persons in six subject areas to serve as trainers for its members nationwide and urged beneficiary members to put what they had acquired into practice, “because the association is interested in improvement in your performance reflecting in examination results”.

A representative of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, Mr Burris Devanney, said the Federation was not only interested in enhancing the professional development of teachers, but also carries out community development and sensitisation on the need to have children educated their children and also undertake self help projects through mobilisation.

This, he said, could contribute to improvement in school infrastructure and create more access to education.

The Course Director, Mr Ernest Asamoah said GNAT was evolving strategies to demystify the teaching and learning of science in schools so as to attract more students since societynis now becoming science and technology driven.

The Regional GNAT Secretary, Mr Thomas Berfi, encouraged teachers to be more committed to their work and ensure their pupils perform better.
