An initiative to promote food security in Ghana and Africa as a whole through sports was officially launched in Accra on Wednesday.

The programme, organized by Organisation for African Development (OAD) which is dubbed ‘Boots for Food Initiative’ will also go along with a Peace Cup Tournament under the theme; ‘Harmonious Citizenry for food Security.’

Former French player Marcel ‘Odenke’ Dessailly was also unveiled as the project ambassador together with some African football stars to be announced soon.

Addressing the gathering, the President of OAD, Mr. Bonaventure Aguissi, said developing agriculture and promoting food security can only thrive in a peaceful environment.

He said this was part of the reason his organisation launched the OAD Peace tournament since sports, especially football, was one of the ways of promoting unity and peace.

He explained that the tournament would be played between February and June next year and has also been grouped in three categories namely; political, special and the main tournament.

The main tournament would be the flagship of the initiative and would be played between traditional and divisional areas in the country. The various communities will then play a regional competition and later play the national event at the Accra Sports Stadium in June 2012.

Representatives of the various political parties are expected to play in the political segment of the tournament, while the youth and children in some selected traditional areas across the country would also play in the special tournament.

Mr. Aguissi said his organisation had already made the necessary arrangements for the growth of agriculture in the country by partnering an agricultural university in India to develop the sector.

Also known in private life as ‘Castro,’ the OAD boss said his outfit would also provide communities with seeds, agric mechanics and bore-hole drilling equipments to help in the growth of agric.
