Basic International, a non-governmental organisation, has put up a new building at worth $350,000 at Chorkor in Accra, on Tuesday, to help train children to improve their quality of life.
Basics International is a faith-based non-governmental organization aimed at fighting illiteracy, child labour and hunger among other things in Ghana, by improving the quality of life for children in extreme poverty.
The programmes manager, Mr. Allotey Bruce-Koduah, said the building consist of a media room, kitchen computer room, library, sowing room among others.
He said this building is also to help in their existing projects like, sponsorhip for daily meals, and life skills training to assistance in reintegrating into larger society.
“Basics have eight programmes impacting and changing the lives of over 500 children and their families each year,” he added.
Mr.Bruce-Koduah explained that over 120 children attend the centre every day, and basically an after school program.
He said the children are educated in environmental protection and health awareness, academic training life skills training, mentoring and accountability for school attendance.
There is also a programme that caters for about 20 girls, who are risk of teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and prostitution, adding it provides a safe heaven for them where they can peruse a vocational skills traning, weekend activities and mentorship program where girls are paired with professionals who can share life experiences and inspire them.
The Executive Director of Basic International, Mrs. Patricia Wilkins, commended its sponsors, Chiefs and leaders of the Ablekuma South constituency for helping her bring ideas into reality.
